Remote Access to Ubuntu Server Using SSH


Install OpenSSH on Ubuntu Server to be able to remote in





sudo systemctl enable ssh

followed by…

sudo systemctl start ssh




sudo systemctl status ssh

Enabled/Active means it’s active




The IP address is required. Obtain the IP address by using ip a command




SSH via PuTTY








SSH via Terminal (CMD)


Type ssh username@IP address

Followed by…

Username’s password





SSH via Terminal (PowerShell)


Same procedure as CMD





SSH via VSCode


Install Remote-SSH Extension first

Crtl + Shift + P and select “Remote-SSH: Connect to Host…



Choose “+ Add New SSH Host…”
