Sniff Like An Expert: The First Move In
Wi-Fi Hacking
Two simple ways to enable and disable monitor mode on a Wi-Fi adapter — one using the manual method with ip link and the other using the automated airmon-ng tool. This is the first step in Wi-Fi hacking and wireless security testing, capturing all nearby wireless traffic
Automated setup using “airmon-ng”
๐ฐ๏ธ Switching from managed to monitor mode disconnects the Wi-Fi adapter from the internet and starts listening and capturing all nearby wireless traffic within range
๐ช airmon-ng check kill stops background services that can interfere with monitor mode
โก airmon-ng start wlan0 automatically enables monitor mode on the Wi-Fi adapter and renames the interface (usually to wlan0mon)
๐ ๏ธ Verify monitor mode is enabled. Once the mode is set to monitor, the adapter is ready for sniffing and wireless analysis
๐ก airodump-ng wlan0mon starts sniffing nearby Wi-Fi networks, showing details like BSSIDs, channels, signal strength and connected devices — all in real time
๐ airmon-ng stop wlan0mon disables monitor mode and restores the Wi-Fi adapter back to managed mode, being able to access the internet again
๐ service networkmanager restart restarts the networkmanager service which brings the Wi-Fi connection back after monitor mode is disabled
